This might sound ideal, after all, you want to be shown content you’re interested in, right? Well, yes. But because of our obsession with screens, algorithms wield an alarming amount of power. They shape the lens through which we view the world, nudging us toward certain ideas while keeping others at arm’s length.

Of course, this might be pretty benign. Like the time I innocently clicked on a “How much would you charge for this cake?” post and ended up inundated with pretty spectacular cakes in my news feed for the next few days. But if you often click on stories that center around your political or religious beliefs, for example, the algorithm will notice and show you more content that echoes those beliefs. Over time, this creates a kind of digital echo chamber where your existing beliefs get amplified, while contrasting viewpoints quietly fade into the background.

Research has shown this effect in action. A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that social media algorithms encourage polarization and increase ideological segregation.

It’s easy to see why this happens: algorithms prioritize engagement, and we tend to engage more with content that feels familiar or confirms what we already think. It’s the psychological principle of confirmation bias at play, that is, cherry-picking facts to support an existing belief. Only it’s the digital media companies cherry-picking the facts for us.

2. Selective exposure limits diverse perspectives.

Of course, there’s something deeply comforting about sharing your passions with like-minded people. But the flip side is that these personalized feeds can limit our exposure to different perspectives.

While encountering alternative views might not change your mind, it can open a window to empathy. Understanding where others are coming from—even if you don’t agree—helps build bridges in a world that often feels divided.

Most people who hold opposing views to you aren’t bad, soulless people; they’re just people who’ve had different life experiences, and undoubtedly different struggles, from you. Without those glimpses into other ways of thinking, we risk living in bubbles that shrink our worldview and dull our compassion.

As a result, algorithms naturally favor emotionally charged posts because they keep you scrolling, clicking, and coming back for more.

You might have come across something called “rage bait”—content designed specifically to provoke anger or outrage. Psychologists tell us it’s the kind of post or headline that grabs your attention by stoking frustration or indignation, encouraging you to react impulsively. When you engage with rage bait, the algorithm takes note and floods your feed with more of the same, creating a cycle that’s hard to break.

What’s more, this dynamic can skew your perception of reality, making certain issues feel more extreme or urgent than they are.  It also impacts your mood and can increase feelings of anxiety and depression.

What’s more, when outrage dominates, compassion can get lost in the noise. Engagement-driven algorithms can deepen divisions, pushing people into emotional corners where understanding and nuance have little space to exist.

4. Subtle biases in the algorithm design can influence the information you see.

Algorithms don’t exist in a vacuum. People collect and code the training data that’s fed into the algorithm, and people bring their own perspectives, assumptions, and blind spots to the table. This creates an echo chamber where opposing views barely register. When election day comes, the results can feel like a shock, as if the wider world has been hiding a secret. The surprise isn’t just about the outcome—it’s about realizing how insulated your worldview was all along.

This phenomenon doesn’t just limit understanding; it can also breed frustration or disbelief when reality doesn’t match the picture painted by your bubble. Recognizing filter bubbles can help you to understand that what feels like a shared reality might actually be a carefully curated slice of a much bigger, more complex world.

False or misleading content has a sneaky way of spreading faster than the truth, both in real life and online. The algorithm doesn’t slow down just because something isn’t true; it keeps promoting what keeps people engaged, regardless of accuracy.

This cycle can turn a small falsehood into a wildfire that becomes impossible to control. Recently, Meta (formerly Facebook) announced it’s going to scale back on fact-checking, which has raised even more concerns about what this means for the flow of (mis)information. Without those checks, misleading posts might gain even more traction unchecked, slipping through the cracks and reaching wider audiences.

We need to get much more cautious about what we read and share. Understanding how quickly and easily misinformation spreads can empower us to pause, question, and seek out reliable sources before accepting or amplifying what’s on our screens.

There is a certain irony in needing critical thinking skills to sift through what’s real versus “fake news” on social media, when research shows the very social media we’re sifting through is hindering our ability to think critically.

When algorithms continuously and rapidly suggest what to watch, read, or listen to next, they leave little room for pause or reflection. Instead of giving you space to think critically about what you’ve just seen, they push you toward the next piece of content—often tailored to what you’re most likely to engage with, not necessarily what challenges you.

In everyday life, this might look like binge-watching videos or scrolling through articles without stopping to consider their source or intent. The algorithm’s gentle nudges keep you moving forward, rarely inviting you to step back and scrutinize what you’re consuming. Over time, this can dull your critical thinking muscles, making it harder to separate fact from opinion or to recognize bias.

8. The role of social proof and popularity signals.

If you’re reading this article through social media, there’s a good chance it appeared in your feed because of likes, shares, or comments from people in your network—or even strangers whose reactions caught the algorithm’s eye. These signals of popularity act like digital applause, telling the algorithm which content is “worth” showing to more people. The more engagement a post gets, the more it spreads, creating a feedback loop where popular ideas gain even more visibility.

Social proof—the idea that we look to others to decide what’s valuable or true—plays a powerful role here. When you see a post with thousands of likes or shares, it’s natural to assume it carries weight or credibility. And whilst many people broadly understand how algorithms work, their exact formula is closely guarded, shrouded in secrecy by the companies that create them. This opacity keeps users in the dark about how their content consumption is being carefully curated behind the scenes.

Because the process is hidden, it’s difficult to truly understand how much influence these invisible gatekeepers wield over what you believe or how you see the world.
